Multi-site fire protection for premises pending cladding replacement
Choice Fire is working on behalf of a major UK property sales, letting and management company to provide wireless, temporary residential fire detection systems in high-rise blocks where existing exterior cladding requires scheduled replacement as a consequence of the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire. The total project value to date is circa £1m. These monitored fire systems have been deemed to be more reliable and cost-effective than the use of ‘waking watchmen’ to patrol the entirety of these premises 24/7.
Wireless heat detectors are positioned at window locations within the flats and common spaces in these buildings, at over 20 locations, some involving multiple high-rise blocks, spanning 6 to 12 floors, mainly in the southeast of England. Choice’ fire systems partner EMS Wireless Fire & Security is providing the technology. Each flat has a minimum of four detectors and signal booster boxes are located as necessary in the buildings to feed fire detector status information to a central controller at each building. Each site system is monitored 24/7 by Choice’ monitoring station partner Scutum Digital.
24/7 Monitoring and Response
Each fire detector’s status (whether operating normally, in fault mode, or indicating a fire incident and the battery status) is under constant observation by the monitoring facility. Choice Fire systems engineers or fire incident response services are notified immediately, as appropriate.
“We are providing a considerably more comprehensive fire protection scheme – and greater reassurance to residents – than human operatives patrolling with access only to common areas,” said Choice Fire Director Mark Bettles. “We are now 18 months into this project which is being carried out in a turnkey manner for the property client. This includes directly undertaking all liaison with individual tenants to explain and organise our installation programmes.”
